K-pop Entertainment Market, Mostly Led by Entertainment Companies, Finds New Stream Inside


For the past several years K-Pop market has made the way for the hallyu wave.



Let's take a close look at the three points of the K-Pop movement.

1. Three major entertainment companies SM, YG, JYP

The three entertainment leadership characteristic is already well known.

SM Entertainment formed a systemized method to train the stars as the first major company in the market. It's well known for releasing the first generation of idol groups including H.O.T., S.E.S., DBSK, BoA, now expanding over to Girls' Generation, Super Junior, SHINee and more. The company's leadership is more expressed as patriarchal.

YG Entertainment was founded 15 years ago and has produced well known artists such as Big Bang, Se7en, and 2NE1. They started being part of the leading entertainment corporations back in 2005 with Big Bang's success. The stars of YG Entertainment are proud of the differences in their artists who have abilities to compose their own songs. The leadership style is more known to be like a family.

Wonder Girls, miss A, 2AM, and 2PM are artists under JYP Entertainment. All three companies are publically traded stock company. And they are considered to be the leading companies of the K-Pop market.

2. Global strategy

JYP Entertainment officially entered the US market with Wonder Girls while SM brought success in Japan after setting a good foundation in China. Unprecedented K-Pop concerts were held in countries of Europe and South America. There were about 150,000 fans gathered in 3 concerts in Japan.

2NE1 was selected as the 'Best New Band in The World 2011' by MTV Iggy while Big Bang won the 'Best Worldwide Act' at MTV's 2011 Europe Music Awards. Many world tours were set off from the beginning of 2012 by Super Junior, Big Bang, KARA, CNBLUE, SHINee, 2PM, BEAST and more.

3. The growth of other entertainment companies

KEYEAST has shown growth that is almost comparable to the big 3 companies. The company recorded three years of surplus. The company co-produced drama 'Dream High' with JYP Entertainment, their actor Kim Soo Hyun is starring in the most popular drama 'The Moon That Embraces The Sun.' Famous star Kim Hyun Joong in Japan is also part of KEYEAST.

Cube Entertainment successfully entered the European market. The 'United Cube Concert' took place in London, Sao Paulo with artists including BEAST, 4minute, and G.Na.

Loen Entertainment is also making its mark as the fastest growing company. Trend setting singer IU is part of Loen.



The new trend by the entertainment companies are stated below.

1. Business diversification of the entertainment companies

The label companies are moving beyond the traditional field of producing albums, drama, and movies. For example, Core Contents Media set up a café in downtown Seoul, SM has already expanded their business to include café, restaurant, karaoke franchise and most recently a travel agency.

2. Growth singers who belong to small entertainment companies

Channels for talented individuals to gain popularity have increased. The popular TV show 'I am A Singer' that is having many talented vocal singers to show off their singing talent, thus opening more opportunities for individuals to express their value of music.



Entertainment companies are making and setting the direction for the music and culture industry. It's exciting to see what will happen next.
